AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
1203 AM PDT Mon Jul 14 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Very hot conditions continue across the interior
today. Some relief to the heat arrives mid to late week, but
conditions remain warm. Isolated dry lightning is possible for the
northern Trinity mountains this afternoon and evening.
&&
.DISCUSSION...Hot weather continues today with most interior
valleys forecast to see temperatures between 100 and 110. The
highest temperatures are likely along the Trinity and Klamath Rivers
in Trinity and Humboldt Counties. A deeper marine layer in Mendocino
County is bringing slightly higher humidities with slightly lower
temperatures. Moderate to Major HeatRisk is expected today, which is
dangerous to those without proper cooling and those sensitive to
heat related illness.
Smoke models are showing higher smoke concentrations in the valleys
this morning. Instability in the afternoon is likely to mix out some
of the haze and improve air quality, except immediately downwind
from the fires. Upper-level moisture from the east along with hot
temperatures and elevated instability does support a slight chance
(10-15%) for an isolated thunderstorm in northern Trinity County.
The ridge moves eastward Tuesday and Wednesday, allowing for the
marine layer to deepen and provide some relief to the hottest
temperatures. Trinity County and northeast Humboldt may still see
hot temperatures through Wednesday, but still see high temperatures
5-10 degrees lower. NBM is showing low probabilities for triple
digits across the area Thursday into the weekend, but 90`s are still
likely. JB
&&
.AVIATION...Shallow coastal stratus has developed along the
North Coast. IFR to periods of LIFR ceilings along with reduced
visibilities with mist/fog are expected at the coastal terminals
through early Monday. Stratus is expected to scatter out by early
Monday afternoon after north to northwest winds push closer to
shore. The winds will especially help clear out stratus around CEC.
Around Humboldt Bay, stratus may be more reluctant to scatter or
lift. VFR conditions are expected inland with some smokey conditions
likely for northern Trinity and interior Humboldt counties.
&&
.MARINE...Gale force winds in the northern outer waters will
gradually expand southward in coverage into Monday, with gusts
exceeding 40 to 45 knots likely in NW PZZ470. As these winds push
towards the coast, near- gale to gale gusts are possible nearshore
of Point Saint George and Cape Mendocino, especially Monday
afternoon. Steep and hazardous seas 9 to 14 feet will likely
propagate into the inner waters as well. Steep wind driven seas 12
to 16 feet are expected through Tuesday, especially in the outer
waters. High pressure will begin to break down Tuesday afternoon,
diminishing hazardous conditions by midweek.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...Overnight offshore winds remain breezy in Del Norte
and northern Humboldt counties. This is keeping RH recoveries poor
to moderate in the high elevations, while recoveries are moderate to
good in the lower elevations. High pressure moves eastward Tuesday
and Wednesday. The marine layer will gradually deepen, improving RH
in the near-coastal areas and lowering high temperatures 5-10
degrees. Offshore flow will begin to weaken, as well.
Upper-level moisture from the east along with elevated instability
does bring a 10-15% chance for isolated dry thunderstorms in
northern Trinity County. Moisture and instability decreases by
Wednesday into later in the week, along with thunderstorm chances. JB
